Potterton boiler service mode
How to put a Potterton boiler into service mode, so it holds maximum or minimum rate while you take combustion readings. 83 models from 28 Potterton installation and servicing manuals, each step with the page it came from.
Grouped by manual: one manual usually covers a range of outputs. The CO₂ figures are the manual's own. Set and check them with a calibrated analyser, never by eye.

THE BURNER PRESSURE AND GAS RATE HAVE BEEN PRECISELY SET AND CHECKED DURING MANUFACTURE AND NO ATTEMPT SHOULD BE MADE TO ADJUST IT. Setting the burner pressures on a modulating gas/air control valve is a complex procedure and should only be attempted by a competent person. Incorrect adjustment will impede the performance of the boiler and may result in HAZARDOUS COMBUSTION. (page 17)

- Allow the combustion to stabilise before inserting probe
From manual 7221179 - 01, page 39.
Setting Boiler to Operate at Low Rate
- Set boiler to operate at a low rate
- If not possible to adjust using boiler controls, set system so boiler modulates to as low an input as possible without burner extinguishing (e.g. by closing radiator valves)
- Allow combustion to stabilise
- Check and record gas rate whilst operating in this condition

Set Boiler to Maximum Rate
- Ensure all external controls are calling for heat.
- Ensure that the system is cold.
- Ensure the boiler control knob is turned fully clockwise.
- Allow the combustion to stabilise. Do not insert probe to avoid 'flooding' the analyser.

Set Boiler to Low Rate
- Set boiler to operate at a low rate.
- If it is not possible to adjust the boiler to run at minimum rate using the boiler controls, the system must be set such that the boiler will modulate to as low an input as possible without the burner extinguishing (e.g. by closing radiator valves).
- Allow the combustion to stabilise. Do not insert probe to avoid 'flooding' the analyser.
- The gas rate must be checked & recorded whilst the boiler is operating in this condition.

Common questions
Is service mode the same as chimney sweep mode?
Yes, in practice. Makers use different names for the same function: service mode, chimney sweep mode, test mode, calibration mode, check programme. Each one holds the burner at a fixed rate, usually maximum then minimum, so you can take a stable combustion reading.
Can I adjust the gas valve while it's in service mode?
Only where the manual gives an adjustment procedure, and only with an analyser in the flue. Many current boilers are set at the factory and the manual says not to touch the gas valve. Where a manual says that, it is shown with the procedure above.
